If you’ve worked hard all year to make the good list by reusing, reducing, and recycling – don’t give up now. Besides the holiday season is a great time to be green.
Just think about all the leftover food, wrapping, etc. that usually ends up in the garbage. That’s a lot of waste.
In fact, Americans throw away 25 percent more trash during the holiday season than any other time of year. That amounts to 25 million tons of trash. This means even the smallest green steps can have a huge impact. So keep it up even after the festivities and make this year a green one.
Just a few eco-friendly tips from Sustainablog:
Wrapping, boxes, etc.:
- Have a bag ready to put wrapping paper in to recycle
- Break down clothing boxes and put away to use again
- Save gift bags to be reused next year
Trees or wreathes
- If your community doesn’t pick trees up, you can find a place nearby by going to Earth911
Leftover food
- Reheat, store it and enjoy some of these yummy leftover recipes
- Give to those in need by donating your extra food to food banks, soup kitchens, and shelters or other charities
- Compost food scraps and yard trimmings
