Women in their 40’s may not need a yearly mammogram, according to a new report from the U.S. Preventative Service Task Force. Instead, the task force recommends women now wait until 50 and receive the screenings once every two years.
But several experts and groups, including the American Cancer Society (ACS), are not on board. In fact, the ACS still recommends regular mammograms after 40.
So what should you do now? While mammograms can be very effective, early screening may also cause more harm than good when results lead to unnecessary procedures. The new guidelines are expected to reduce cancer scares, costs, and prevent over-treatment. Keep in mind these are recommendations — really it’s up to you and your doctor. According to the new guidelines – women of all ages should talk to their doctor about the benefits and risks before getting a mammogram. If you’re concerned or at higher risk, you can still get a mammogram before 50.
Although the benefits of self breast exams are still unclear, it’s a good idea to know your body and pay attention to any changes. Visit The Beehive for more information about breast cancer, screenings and health care services.
