President Obama recently announced $3.4 billion in stimulus grants will be used to create a “smart” power grid, bringing the U.S. electric system into the digital age.
Why the updates? Our current system is outdated and costly. But new digital transformers, smart meters and other in-home devices could change that. These new technologies will give you more control over your utility use and costs, reduce outages, and help develop cleaner energy. Another reason for the upgrade – 9.8 percent unemployment means we need more jobs. Over the next few years, this investment will create tens of thousands of jobs, ranging from electrical engineers to data entry clerks.
