Mattel has released a new line of black Barbie dolls with features including fuller lips and varying skin tones — a step up from her 1960s counterpart, Christie, who was ultimately a white Barbie doll dyed brown.
These dolls are also meant to inspire girls around the country and promote careers like math and music. But some critics still see room for improvement and this time it’s not about her measurements. The main concern is black Barbie’s long straight hair. Many are worried that these dolls don’t address the beauty and self-esteem issues young black girls struggle with today. And much like her white friend, this Barbie may set even more unrealistic standards for young women everywhere.
Do you think the new Barbie dolls accurately portray African-American women? Would you buy this doll for your daughter?
