For the first time since the mid-1970s, seniors, disabled Americans and others will not see a cost of living increase in their Social Security benefits.
The yearly increase generally helps people keep up with rising prices, especially healthcare. But deflation and the weak economy mean less aid. Even for those who really need it. So President Obama and others are asking Congress to spring for a one-time payment of $250 to help seniors through the recession. This averages out to about $20 a month, but every little bit counts. These payments would also go to those receiving veterans benefits, disability benefits and retired public employees.
