Back to school time usually means new clothes and a list of supplies. But this year students are also getting lots of reminders about staying healthy and taking steps to avoid swine flu.
With the help of Sesame Street’s Elmo, a new health campaign will raise awareness about flu prevention and hygiene. Elmo appears in a series of public service announcements that cover topics like hand washing, sneezing, etc. The lovable Muppet will help get these important messages to kids and parents around the country (read the full story on AFP).
As schools start back up, getting the message out about how to prevent the spread of swine flu is even more important than before. While a vaccine should be available soon, US officials still worry about a repeat of flu outbreaks as children return to class. Kids in school mean even more opportunities to get sick.

These announcements are aimed mostly at younger children and their parents because they are more at risk from the swine flu virus. But, no matter how old you are or your risk, everyone has something to learn from Elmo.
Even taking simple preventative steps can help your family stay healthy and avoid sick days. Here are just a few suggestions:
- Stay home and try to avoid others if you’re sick
- Wash your hands regularly with soap
- Cover coughs and sneezes with your sleeve not your hands
- Stay well (get plenty of sleep, eat healthy, exercise, etc.)
- Visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for more wellness tips and advice for Stopping Germs at Home, Work and School
