“Hope begins in the dark, the stubborn hope that if you just show up and try to do the right thing, the dawn will come. You wait and watch and work: You don’t give up.”
- Anne Lamott
That is one of my favorite quotes of all time. And I was reminded of it yesterday while watching a new program on the Public Internet Channel called “What Inspires You?”. The program follows a man named Shad Ireland, who is biking across the U.S. despite suffering from kidney disease. He is trying to raise money and awareness to fight kidney disease, which affects millions.
The show is meant to be inspiring, and it is. But I was reminded of hope in one of the episodes when he stuggles to get going in the early morning despite days of dehydration in the desert. I think of hope because it is what inspires all of us. It inspires Shad to keep going. It inspires all of us to do the difficult things in life. It begins in the dark and will only come if you work for it.
I’m rooting for Shad and really hope you will check out this series. Millions suffer from kidney disease, but we can fight back and live better, healthier lives. If he can bike across the country, we can at least watch and learn.
