In our economy, it’s easy to worry about how you’re going to afford tomorrow, let alone college tuition. Fortunately, there are national service programs, like AmeriCorps, that can help make college more affordable.
AmeriCorps is a national volunteer program that supports communities by rebuilding and improving infrastructure. Volunteers have a chance to make a difference as they clean up playgrounds and parks, weatherize homes, help the poor, mentor students, etc.
Recently, The Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act was signed into law to expand these programs. The $5.7 billion bill triples the size of the AmeriCorps service program and provides even more ways to earn money for college (read the full story on The Associated Press).
The national service bill will help the country and students in several ways, some of these include:
- Creates 175,000 new volunteer positions around the nation
- Increases the full-time education award to $5,350 for 2010.
- Develops new service groups to help low-income communities with energy, education, health care, and better services for veterans.
- Seniors (55+): Can receive up to $1,000 education award/scholarship for being involved in the community. There are many post-career service opportunities as well as new careers. The award can be given to a child, grandchild, friend, etc.
- Students (grade 6-12): by participating in the Summer of Service program, middle and high school students have the opportunity to earn up to $1000 for college.
