No Need to Sugarcoat It: A Sweet Break From the Recession

These days it’s all about the simple (and cheap) pleasures, so many are looking for new ways to save but still have fun. Well, even those cutting way back have found one luxury item that can remain on the list. People everywhere are buying more candy.

But it’s not kids with their hand caught in the cookie jar. Adults seem to be finding a little relief in their favorite childhood sweets too.

Even those on the tightest budgets are setting aside a few bucks for their sugar fix. With costs rising and jobs disappearing it’s difficult to find ways to spoil yourself now and then. With candy, it’s easy to splurge without breaking the bank. This may be a tip we took from the folks who lived through the Great Depression. Even during our greatest financial crisis people found a way to buy candy.

While it may not be the healthiest treat, even a little sugar can go a long way.

So why is everyone jumping on the candy wagon? One reason for the sugar rush is that candy is cheap! You can get a pound of it for only a few dollars and it will last as long as you let it. Candy also reminds us of better days, like before bills started piling up or even a time where your greatest concern was who to play with on the playground. Those were the days.

While too much of anything isn’t good for you, just a little bit of candy can be very comforting. You can spread the joy too! A jar of jelly beans on your desk can give even the grumpiest coworker a little pick-me-up!

Check out our post Simple Luxuries Can Bring Big Smiles for ways to save without giving up all the things you enjoy.

    - I’m one of the guilty following this trend.

Joe, me too! I am hooked on jelly beans..they’re cheap but I still get to feel like I’m doing a little something for me.

Not a fan of candy, please share any of your favorite cheap treats that keep you going during hard times.

    Thanks for your comment
