As we bask in the glory of President Barack Obamas inauguration, we continue to hear about our economic crisis, a national stimulus packages, and green jobs. And while we all know we need the economic push and pull, because quite frankly the economy is in a scary place, many of us are wondering
- What exactly is a green job?
- How will that help me?
- Are they really going to make a difference?
Green jobs are occupations or employment opportunities that focus on developing and using renewable sources as well as promoting energy efficiency:
- Wind
- Solar
- Biofuels
- Weatherizing Homes and Businesses
This is extended to consider companies that use or supply energy-efficient technology and pollute less with coal and other hazardous substances. Corporations that switch to greener practices will be able to look forward to better tax breaks.
This is really exciting because with Obama’s promise and plan to support green energy, technology, and push for growth around green jobs we should see some cushion in the unemployment situation. With Obamas plan we should see about 459,000 jobs that will fall directly into the green employment category, that’s a small number compared to the 3.7 million he is predicting by 2010, but it’s a very exciting number for our environment and any fan of the green movement!
If you are interested in green employment that can mean a variety of things, from positions requiring a lot of credentials like:
- Wildlife Conservationist
- Solar Installer
- Stainability Consultant
To entry level jobs like:
- bicycle repairers
- food production with an organic or green company
- public transit jobs
