As we head into Thanksgiving this year, some might look around and think: Thankful for what? The economic news just keeps getting worse, with more banks and businesses in trouble, unemployment rising and hunger becoming a bigger problem at a time of year when we should be feasting.
Reports say the number of Americans using food stamps has passed the 30 million mark for the first time ever. It was only last month that we wrote about the number hitting 29 million with changes in the food stamp program that make more people eligible. It seems this is an issue that will be with us for a while, holiday season of not.
You can use this online tool to find out if your family can get food stamp benefits. You can also call your state to learn more about the program. A list of phone numbers for each state can be found here.
So as I head into Thanksgiving with my family, I’m thinking about what we should be thankful for. The answer for me is, I live in a country where we have food stamps. I wish no one needed them, but I’m glad the help is there for those who need it.
What are you thankful for?
